January 6, 2009
A towering brand in the display domain, Pioneer has proudly launched the fully loaded nineth generation KURO Plasma TV recently. KURO means “the perfect black” in Japanese and KURO ’s bottomless depth of blacks prove it right. Pioneer KURO LX6090 Plasma TV is a 60″ HD Ready 1080p Plasma TV with mindblowing picture clarity, especially with Blu-Ray discs and SKY. The robust blacks, always the basic aspect of Pioneer plasma models, coupled with the shiny bright whites, reveal a massive colour contrast ratio. The motion rendering is dealt skillfully to deliver stable images with almost no judders and shakes.
The sound quality is sophisticated and the stereo speakers are exceptionally good in reproducing even subtle voice signals. Many enhancement features are included in Pioneer Kuro to give the best images. Improved Direct colour filter is used for reducing the accidental light bleed within each plasma cell. Colour toning, brightness, and black levels are controlled in an individual pixel level to enhance the picture quality. KURO LX6090 includes 100 frames per sec to enhance picture stability. The truely expansive tonal range from Pioneer, blends the subtle colours and portrays the image with terrifying accuracy and details. The subtlety offered by the wide tonal range is most obvious in the skin tones, which look quite natural and lacks the striping or plastickiness, as in other flat TVs. The features include video noise reduction, on-screen menu, i-CLEAR Drive, room light sensors, Active DRE, JPEG Photo Playback, Digital Noise Reduction, etc.
The usual KURO features like Crystal Emissive Layer, Deep Waffle Rib, etc are present in this Plasma too. Crystal Emissive Layer enhances the luminance efficiency and stability of plasma discharge cycle while the Deep Rib Structure cuts down the interpixel light and the colour bleed. The 24p sources are dealt well with the help of 72Hz mode, and it is going to turn on most of the movie buffs with unparallelled picture quality. The noise reduction is outstanding and the colour manipulation flexibility is terrific. The Pioneer’s image processing is clean and crisp. When coupled with the Blu-Ray sequences, KURO’s image delivery is amazing. Pioneer boasts “Dont Watch, Dont Listen, Be transformed by the whole new experience” and KURO proved it right with its dizzying high performance. The best picture quality, blacker blacks, complete connectivity, and intelligent optimisation makes it a beautifully sculpted technical extravaganza. The connectivity includes 1 USB port,3 HDMI inputs,3SCART connectors, 1 component input , 1 VGA input, Phono output optical audio out, 1 composite input and sub-woofer terminals.

The resolution of Pioneer PDP-LX6090 60″ widescreen HD Ready Plasma TV is 1920 x 1080 pixels. The aspect ratio is 16:9 and supports all possible broadcast formats. It is Full HD Compatible and is HD Ready. The in-built digital tuner or Freeview helps the users access certain channels for free. The progressive scan ensures the augmented picture quality. PIP allows multitasking for the users and the stereo speakers produce a combined output of 2 x 18W. The audio enhancement features like SRS Surround, SRS WOW HD, and SRS TruBass make it sure that the audio rendered is as good as the images. The frequency of Pioneer KURO is 60Hz. This means the signal is updated 60 times to create sharper and more precise images. The dimensions of the plasma are 87.6 x 146.5 x 9.3cm. It weighs 50.8 kg. The major drawback of Pioneer KURO is the very heavy price tag, which is affordable to only a very few people. KURO is power hungry too, with an operational power requirement of 510W; while in sleep mode it is only 0.4W, although. Lack of power on/off switch forces the user to unplug the TV to switch it off. Mastering the inputs are tricky and some of the features in the on-screen menu are a little tough to track down in a hurry. Initial set up is lengthy, and you have to activate the HDMI sockets manually, which is not so easy. However, these are all compromisable for the incredible performance offered by this plasma television.

Goodmans GTV42P2 Plasma TV
January 3, 2009
One has to raid a major share of the hard earned savings to own a high-end plasma TV. Goodmans has made public its latest model Goodmans GTV42P2 42″ Plasma TV for a reasonable price that is accessible to many. The 42″ widescreen Plasma TV has a display resolution of 852 x 480 pixels, which can support only conventional broadcast formats. The HDTV compatiblity is lacking, which can make this big screen defunct in a few years. The aspect ratio is 16:9 and the brightness is 650cd/m², which is relatively low. It works in 50Hz frequency with 2 in-built tuners. The HDReady TV has a good Sound system powered by Dolby virtual surround and NICAM digital stereo. There are 4 SCART connections and it features PIP too. The two speakers has 14W each and Goodmans GTV42P2 has an auto tuner apart from a sleep timer.
The DVI input makes the connectivity of Goodmans GTV42P2 Widescreen Plasma TV good but unfortunately it is not HDCP compatible. The other downsides include absence of component video inputs, the misty grey that denies robust deep blacks in the image, and so on. The images lack the vigour and brightness and is slighlty furryedged and soft. The video noise is quite obvious and colour stripping is also a matter of concern. Moreover DVI and VGA inputs are not configured for progressive scan or HD sources. Though the sharpness of the image is affected, Goodmans GTV42P2 has natural colours even for the skin tones. The speakers are average with good stagesound; but the poor midrange and bass performances may sound harsh in high volumes. Even the looks of the TV is moderate. No stylish flourishes, as in the conventional established brands like hitachi, pioneer, etc are there in Goodmans GTV42P2. Fastext feature is present. Freeview is avaliable in this TV and 3D Digital Comb filter is present to filter the noise. It is not the right choice if you are expecting a dizzying performance like the well-known brands. But if you are ready to compromise for a moderate performance, this mid-budget big screen would not disappoint you.

You can use a suitable adaptor and do SCART connections in one of the component ports. The NEC50XR6 is not so user friendly. The lengthy setup includes wiring and bolting up the seperate speakers and also fixing the heavy swivel stand . The limited connectivity will surely affect the popularity despite of all the plus like sumptously rich colour depth of 1.07billion colours, deep blacks and robust image rendering, excellent sound delivery with the 18Wspeakers connected, exceptionally good images with no trails of common plasma awes like color striping, noisy blacks, flickery noise over motion or any sort of resolution loss.
