AU Optronics has indicated that it aims to double it’s LED-backlit panel shipments from 10% in 2010. According to the company’s global business unit vice president Paul Peng, the worldwide LCD TV market will see an LED backlighting penetration rate of about 15-20% in 2010, while LED-backlit monitors will have penetration rates ranging of 15-20%.
Mr Peng indicated that vendors will officially begin launching 3D TVs during the second quarter of 2010, during which the total shipments could reach one million. By the end of this year, most notebooks will have LED-backlit panels, he said. With the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays just two weeks away, Mr Peng said that Chinese vendors are expecting a high demand and are taking up steps to meet it.
AU Optronics is the largest thin film transistor liquid crystal display panel (TFT-LCD) manufacturer in Taiwan, and is one of the top three manufacturers in the world. AUO manufactures panels for a several consumer electronics companies, like Samsung, ViewSonic, Apple and BenQ, to name a few. The company supposedly won a “LEED gold” award recently for having maintained a green factory.
