The Latest OLED Prototype From Sony Is Less Than 1mm!!!
July 5, 2009
Sony Corp. is galloping ahead constantly in the OLED technology. With the debut of 3mm OLED television in Ceatec 2007, Sony proved to be the unrivalled veteran in OLED domain. Majority of the leading brands realized scope of OLED displays, and has stepped forward for experimenting more on this field. Most of the competitors like Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, etc. are striving hard to come up with bigger panels. Prototypes for bigger panels were released in many of the display expos; but none of the prototypes are realized as a commercially available product yet.
Sony has once more created the boom with the release of a 1mm thick prototype; the novel face of minimalist approach!!! The latest prototype measures about 0.9mm (to be precise), and was unveiled in the Ceatec 2008 Expo in Japan. Ultra responsiveness, increased brightness and better contrast are some among the reasons for the improvement in the picture quality in OLED televisions.
Sony has demoed the 0.3mm panel of this “truly slender” prototype recently. It makes use of the same panel as that of Sony XEL-1 OLED Television, the only commercially available OLED television. However, Sony Corp is still sorting out the technical issues for manufacturing larger OLED screens. Thickness of the latest OLED screen from Sony is almost one-third of that of Sony XEL-1 OLED Television, and almost one-tenth as that of the thinnest LCD display! Surprising, isn’t it?
OLED is judged to be the future of flat panel displays. With the wafer-thin profile and extremely high energy efficiency, OLED televisions are much-appreciated gizmos by both environmentalists and techno-freaks. The exceptionally good picture quality fuels the admiration for these displays. Sony officials revealed that the panel used in XEL-1 and the latest prototype is similar. However glass substrates are carefully ground to obtain this wafer thin 0.9mm panel!
Although it comes with a slimline profile, the latest prototype is found to be more brittle compared to the XEL-1 OLED Television. Oops!! This wafer-thin television can be a nightmare for those who have kids at any age! Many of the speculative minds are buzzing that the possibilities for the release of updated XEL-1 OLED Television (of-course even thinner) are high. Wish atleast the updated OLED Television comes with a rational price tag!
