During a recent television launch, Panasonic announced their plans to develop an HD OLED Television within a couple of years. Likely to be a 37 inch OLED Televisions, Panny officials seem to be tight lipped about the price details and release date. The short span of the existing OLED television has already created hushes among the gadget-o-geeks.

It is said that Sony XEL 1 OLED television offers a display life of around 30,000 hours. A conventional plasma television offers a life span of around 100,000 hours which is almost three fold than that of this pricey 11 inch OLED television. The reports point out that Panasonic was planning to postpone their entry into the OLED market.

Panasonic televisions show an average lifespan of atleast 50,000 hours before the display brightness is reduced to half. Panny officials assured that they will solve the short display life of OLED televisions by incorporating new metal membrane in the television.

Toshiba, formerly known as Matsushita has also revealed their plans to work on this project. However they have not yet disclosed the work capacity done by them. Matsushita has been researching in the OLED technology for a long time, as they have acquired the licensed printable OLED technology from Cambridge Display Technology in 2006 itself.

Though, Panasonic had announced its plans for 37 inch display before, this joint venture throws light to the fact that Panny is about to focus on huge-sized OLED screens.
