LEDs are light emitting diodes, with hundreds of small LEDs illuminating the screen. From the screen behind, light shines through the LED TV screen matrix comprising of signal controlled liquid crystal cells (LCD) which lets colours and lights through, thus building up a picture. LED Television Technology is gaining ground by the day. After the advent of Plasma TVs and LCD TVs, the next big thing in the television industry is the LED TVs. The designing as well as the availability of LED TVs in the market is increasingly becoming popular these days. Though LED TVs are currently sold commercially at very high prices with hefty price tags, they are more slimmer, highly energy efficient and have an extremely good picture quality. LED lighting is a new, revolutionary technology that has taken the TV market by storm.
LED Televisions are of two types – Back lit models and Edge lit models. In Backlit models, LEDs, from behind the panel, shine their lights directly forward. The Edge lit models, on the other hand, have systems, that, from around the edges of the panel, shoot light. The real advantage of the Edge lit models is that their displays can be made much thinner than the Back lit models. That said, the Back lit models also have a clear advantage – the back lit array of LEDs can be controlled more precisely, thus providing for better contrasts and real dark blacks as well. LEDs, in fact, are solid state components which cannot burn out. They are really small lights that are hugely reliable and really bright too. Hundreds of LEDs arranged across the display go on to spread light evenly.
While some systems use white LEDs, others use a combination of red, green as well as blue LEDs. White arrays provide for very even illumination, thus improving the contrast levels, while the coloured arrays provide for a wider colour gamut. But, if you are looking at better performance as such, then the choice is fairly subjective, depending upon your preferences. Today’s LED TVs pack a punch with internet connections, multimedia device connectivity, are DLNA compatible and all next gen features.
