Flexible OLED Television Prototype From Sony

June 13, 2009

“Dad, you must be kidding!!! It is impossible to make televisions that can be rolled or bent.” Joe was all set for a heated discussion with me. Diane entered the hall with her dashing smile and steaming cups of coffees. Diane passed that ‘honey, another teaching lesson???’ look, and left the living room. Joe has a special interest towards technologies, and I always fuel the fire in him by introducing the latest ones.

“Dad, I have read in science fictions about the bendable televisions, and I have seen that concept in some animation movies and cartoons too. But… How is it possible in real life?”
“Hey come here kiddo…” he was sitting next to me with the curious face. I always love the way my baby boy listens to me, especially when it comes to technologies. “Joe, Have you heard of OLED televisions?”
“Oh yeah.. OLED televisions is the latest one among televisions. Just like LCD television, plasma television and all. Right?”
“Good dear. You are correct. It is a display technology, and flexible televisions are based on this technology.”
“Mmmm???”

“Well Joe, I think it is a good idea to browse about flexible televisions
“Ok daddy.” We settled down comfortably in the floor carpet.
We made a quick browse an millions of results were flowing for Sony Flexible OLED Television.
“Dad.. Look at it.. cool right??” He was so excited at the very sight of a flex-oled!!!
“Yeah my boy.. It is a flexible display and as I told you, it makes use of oled technology. It comes with a screen size of 2.5inches.”

“Dad,that is way too small right?”
“Yeah.. but it is a new technology, and they are doing research on it. So first they will develop smaller models only.”
“Mmm… what is so enticing about this television?”
“Well… it is a flexible television which can be bent or rolled as you wish.”
I can see his eyes popping up like two big bulls-eye!!! “Dad…” He had a puzzled expression in his eyes. “why our television is not flexible? What makes the OLED televisions bent or roll so easily?”

“Our televisions are made of glass and it will break into pieces if you bend it. And your hand too” I just winked at him mischievously. “The flexible televisions makes use of ultra thin polymers which are bendable and is much resistant. A single display is made of numerous layers of these polymers to add durability.”

“Oh.. then they will be awfully thick!!” he frowned.
I smiled and continued,”No dear, they are not.. Actually each layer in the television is almost 1/1000th of our single hair strand, so these televisions are paper thin.”
“WOW!!! so what about Sony’s bendable television?”
“Well, it is called “Flex-OLED” and can be bent gently. They are thin sheets of plastic and comes with a display resolution of 160 x 120 pixels. It offers reasonable pictures with optimised brightness and contrast.”

After having a hot sip, I showed him few snaps, and then continued… “CES is the symposium where all leading technical manufacturers showcase their exclusive products. This was one from Sony on CES 2009.”
“Since it is very small sized, it won’t be so heavy right?”
“No dear, it weighs only 1.5 grams. And the best feature of OLED display is the energy efficiency. It won’t drain off lots of power for operation.”
“Oh.. that is pretty interesting. Can we get one dad?”
“It is not yet commercially available dear. You wont get it in stores. It is an experimental prototype. They will soon develop the commercial product. Then I’ll get it it for you.”
“Wow.. Dad, so is it really possible to make sci-fi concepts true?”

“Yes.. you can.. for that you need to learn lots of technologies, that too in great depth. Never miss a chance to grab knowledge my dear. All these will help you to realise your sci-fi dreams. And there is one most important fact. Your invention must be beneficial to the human race dear.”
I saw a new twinkle in his eyes as he was admiring the images of Sony flexible television.
