OLED Televisions are gaining prevalence rapidly in the display industry. It is anticipated that OLED will be the prominent display technology pretty soon due to its high energy efficiency and svelte design. Research is going on in the headlong pace to release more ready to sell commercial OLED Televisions. Currently, only Sony XEL-1 OLED Television is available in the OLED TV market. Lot of biggies from the leading display makers are expected to be released in the final quarter of 2009. As Panasonic revealed its plan to come up with the 40” OLED display, Sony immediately announced the bigger 21” OLED display which is expected to release by this September.
Here comes another warning shot for Sony!!! NHK(Nippon Hoso Kyokai), the public broadcaster in Japanese has introduced a better flexible display. Sony was the first and only player to release OLED flexible display so far. Now that NHK has gamed in, let us have a peep to see what is so special about the latest flexible displays. The NHK’s flexible OLED display is having a screen size of 5.8”. yet another shining star of this display is the ability to reproduce moving images in colour. It is the stepping stone for the portable televisions that enables us to watch the television programs anywhere and anytime; all one need to do is to unroll this entertainment sheet to enjoy the telly programs. However NHK display has to go long way to reach this stage!!!
Lightweight and ultra thin displays are realised with the help of OLED Technology. It was demonstrated by the researchers lately. This flexible device comes with a high display resolution of 213 x 120 pixels, and reproduces motion images in a better way. However, being a baby, this display showed some immature signs like too many bad pixels and lines that was stuck on a particular colour. Since these displays are flexible in nature, it is vulnerable to breaking, and that creates the major downsides of the display. However, it will be resolved as the technology is growing up gradually. Another issue of NHK flexible display is the low contrast and brightness; the researchers has to work with their sleeves up to sort this issue.
NHK Flexible Display Versus Sony Flexible Display
Sony was the one who kicked off the maiden venture to manufacture the flexible displays using OLED technology. In the CES 2009 in Las Vegas, Sony pulled the curtains off their much priced flexible display. With 2.5” screen size, and a display resolution of 160 x 120 pixels, Sony displays showcased appealing performance with optimised contrast and brightness. The bad pixels and similar issues were relatively low for Sony compared to the NHK display. However, we should never forget that NHK’s display is twice as that of the one from Sony. Hence the issues to be fixed will also be increased comparatively.
NHK has upped the display resolution compared to the sony’s smaller screen; NHK researchers has also revealed that they are planning to come up with a larger display. Planning to create a display with almost the size of an A4 paper, NHK researchers unveiled that the display size will be approximately 14”. The NHK flexible display has been exhibited and demonstrated in NHK’s Science & Technical Research Laboratories. The NHK officials also disclosed that they are looking for apt partners in the consumer electronics industry to commercialise their prototypes.
