All about Display Resolution

October 20, 2008

Objects that appear natural to our eyes must also appear natural on the screen. Otherwise it would certainly seem dull and artificial as there is seldom any factor for excitement. Pictures appear natural only if the resolution of the particular display on which they happen, effectuates an appropriate detailing of them, well in terms of their magnification. Crisp and sharp images not only appeal and sooth ones eyes, but also relaxes a tired mind. There are various types of display resolution standards to suit the user’s taste as well as wallet, and here in this review, display resolution is discussed in brief.

What is Display Resolution?

Display resolution is referred to, as the number of distinct pixels that are produced in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. It is conveniently called pixel resolution as well. The term display resolution is used in fixed pixel array displays such as Liquid Crystal Displays, Plasma Display Panels, Display Light Processing projectors and other types of displays powered with similar technologies. Pictures appear with high clarity, when more information is displayed in a small area with high resolution. Display resolution is further explained by two factors, namely optical resolution and image resolution. Aspect ratio is another similar factor, which is the ratio between the width and height of the picture. The physical aspect ratio and the aspect ratio of the individual picture is not always the same. Digital video processing is used in some CRT displays, which requires image scaling via memory arrays. Display resolution in displays like CRT are affected by several parameters such as astigmatic effects in display corners, focus and spot size, video bandwidth and a colour phosphor pitch shadow mask.

Computers come with higher resolution. A resolution of 1024 x 768p is considered to be an acceptable default. An aspect ratio of 5:4 with a resolution of 1280×1024 pixels, has become more popular in LCD monitors. Computer displays come with various standards. Display resolution, colour depth and refresh rates are associated with the display resolution. A display adaptor is associated with the refresh rates and screen resolution. Display adapters of recent times come with advanced functions, such as software controlled interfaces and display functions.

Image Resolution

Image resolution is one factor that deeply describes  the image. Images include film images and digital images. Often the term pixel resolution is referred to as the pixel counting in digital imaging. Pixel resolution normally refers to two positive integers with first number referring to the number of pixels column wise and the second number referring to the number of pixels, row wise. Resolution is also referred to as the number of mega pixels which is calculated by multiplying pixels on the column to the pixels on the row and then dividing it by one million. It can also be referred to as the pixels per square inch or pixels per inch. An image that comes with 2048 pixels width wise and 1536 pixels column wise has a total of 3,145,728 pixels (2048 x 1536) or 3.1 mega pixels.

Optical Resolution

Optical resolution is the ability of an imaging system to resolve the details in the object that is being imaged. An imaging system that consists of recording and display components and a lens contribute to the optical resolution of the system.

General

Resolution come with several factors. Therefore, every manufacturer is keen in delivering display products with a proper resolution. Users of the display equipments must certainly have some knowledge about the resolution factors shrouding them. This will help them at the time of purchase and also, while setting the right resolution.
