The consumer electronic industry has achieved remarkable growth rate in the past decades.  Innumerable products and services were offered to the consuming world as a result of its mushroom growth.  Entry of many entrepreneurs resulted in the production of equipments and devices in several brand names kindling competition in the market.  New models of similar products in various designs and with multifarious features flooded the markets. Consumers were delighted to have so many choices in the consumer durable markets and the consequent cost advantages.

But in the course of time unforeseen problems developed when components manufactured and marketed by different companies were found incompatible with one another.  In some cases, products of same manufacturer were found having similar problem of incompatibility.  The absence of a common standard for products created problems for the consumers.  There were no rules or regulations regarding the standards that are to be adhered to in the production of components or equipments.  There was no uniformity in the standards followed by different manufacturers.

In 2003, a few leading companies like Nokia, HP, Sony, Panasonic agreed to work together in order to develop a certification protocol and establish a system to bring out uniformity in the standard specifications.  After intensive research and collective resolve, the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) came into existence in 2008.  Common standards are now clearly specified and DLNA became the certifying authority with its unique trade mark.  By the end of 2008 about 250 manufacturing companies and 3000 products were brought under the DLNA umbrella.

Among innumerable components of television, monitor screen is considered as the most vital one that contribute substantially towards the performance of the device.  It is also the most affected part due to the incompatibility of other adapted components in the system.  Prescription of a common standard for adaptable components helped to reduce many of the problems associated with the display screen.  For example, burn- in, glare, reflections, low or excess brightness which are some of the very common aberrations in the plasma screen could be effectively remedied when vital components were brought under the DLNA regime.

It was a major transformation for the plasma screens.  Many of the blemishes usually found in the conventional plasma screens in the past disappeared under the new certification system.  The consumers who shied away from plasma television because of complex problems in the monitor screens are now wooed back to accept the hassle-free product with DLNA trade mark. The success story of the DLNA certification scheme has prompted many other leading manufacturers in the consumer electronic segment to accept the protocol as a universally specified standard in the best interests of the industry and the consumers.
