Continued discussions and debates on the merits and demerits of plasma television among the consuming public is a clear indication of its popularity.  Many who are fascinated by the form and content of the modern plasma television are not ready to accept adverse remarks about it in the market reviews and web pages.  Its popularity is now unchallengeable in the home theatre segment. No doubt, in the large screen category there is little or no alternative for plasma.

In the contemporary market environment, plasma television is facing stiff competition from Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) television.  In such a situation it is quite natural that consumers compare the respective merits and demerits of the two technologically different products.  Plasma technology is based on the creation of plasma which is defined as the fourth state of the matter other than solid, liquid and gas. Extreme temperature caused by electricity can split the atoms of a gas to create plasma.  This is a mixture of charged particles of electrons and ions, according to scientists.  In the case of television the display screen consists of two panels of glass with inert mixture of noble gases filled in between them.  It will be turned into plasma by passing electricity which can ignite the phosphorus.  The resultant luminescene is the source of light in the plasma television.

No other technology can provide light up to 1000 lux or more, as in the case of plasma.  The superb degree of brightness in the plasma screen is the most distinctive feature of the product.  The screen brightness of superior luminescence is ideal for large sized screens of above 32 inches.  In the early models there was a drawback. Power consumption was high in plasma television than other categories.  But now new techniques are being employed to solve this problem.

Other disadvantages attributed to plasma television are the generation of heat resulting from phosphorus burning and its inability to perform in high altitude areas.   An earlier problem of short lifespan is now remedied through technological up gradation.  In totality plasma television is a superb product that is sought after by those consumers who acknowledge its special features and exceptional quality of performance.
